Health NZ E-cigarette Trial Results

The tests undertaken by the Clinical Trials Research Unit at Auckland University have been completed, and the results show that the e-cigarette “is effective in relieving smokers’ cravings for a tobacco cigarette”. Of course, we already knew that  Here’s the Media Release from Health NZ:

The Ruyan® electronic cigarette, which provides nicotine for inhalation in the form of a harmless mist, is effective in relieving smokers’ cravings for a tobacco cigarette, according to New Zealand researchers.

Choosing between it and the Nicorette inhaler already on sale, two thirds of smokers would recommend it to a friend, two thirds liked its taste better, and over half would prefer it for stopping smoking, says Dr Murray Laugesen, a co-investigator in a study just completed at the Clinical Trials Research Unit, University of Auckland.

In this randomised double-blind study, 40 smokers tested different strengths of e-cigarette on different days. On its first day of use, the e-cigarette relieved cravings to smoke, though not as fully as the smoker’s usual brand of cigarette.

After one session smoking the Ruyan® e-cigarette, cravings began to lessen within five minutes, with a maximum reduction at 15 minutes. Cravings remained lower for at least one hour. No harmful effects were reported during one day’s use.

The study was designed and completed in New Zealand, and funded by the manufacturer, Ruyan Holdings Ltd, Beijing, through Health New Zealand Ltd, which specializes in testing alternatives to tobacco cigarettes. More data will be available in a few weeks and further research is planned for later in 2008.
